Rock
Rock music has been a dominant force in popular music around the world since it first appeared in the United States during the 1950s. The term is broadly used to label a variety of substyles, including rockabilly, folk rock, soul, funk, punk, bubblegum pop, disco, heavy metal, and alternative, among others. Rock music reflects the ideals and interests of youth subculture around the globe. Young adults in Japan, South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Great Britain, and elsewhere have embraced it as a means of channeling their angst, affections, admirations, and energy into distinctive musical styles that could easily be discussed as a book in itself. The United States, however, still provides the central influence on rock music styles around the world through the international mass media, Internet, and concert tours of some of the most popular artists.
