Samba
The term samba derives from semba, a word that refers to the “belly bump” of the batuque, an African ritual dance from Angola transplanted to Brazil. Samba today describes a variety of musical styles, in much the same way that the term jazz identifies an array of music forms. Some of these include samba rural (rural samba), samba de morro (hill samba), samba corrido (verse samba), samba choro (choro samba), samba da cidade (city samba), and samba canção (song samba).
