Timba

Timba is often referred to as Cuban salsa. Rooted in the son tradition, timba musicians incorporate many of the recognized features of mainstream "American" salsa and Latin pop but also add a variety of folk, classical, and popular traditions found on the island. American rock influences often appear in the form of the electric guitar or synthesizer, usually used to add an orchestral "string" sound, and a drum set with a prominent kick drum. The lyrical content of timba songs often expresses Cuban nationalism and is critical of U.S. politics and social indulgences. Timba also tends to utilize the "reverse" clave rhythm (2+3) and may exclude any clave rhythm altogether, opting for a straight, less syncopated, duple dance beat.
