Chansons
One category of popular song is a form common to France known as chanson, typically a solo vocal performance with or without instrumental accompaniment. Chansons are usually sung in French and frequently performed in cabarets (nightclubs or restaurants that feature live entertainment). They are particularly lyrical compared to other European popular music, which is often more dance oriented, and their lyrics often dwell on themes of romance and the challenges of daily life.
