The two current forms of diagnostic classification are the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10). The DSM uses the same numbering system and general diagnostic information as the ICD-10, because the United States, as a World Health Organization member country, must use the ICD standard. There are several current issues with the DSM. These include a lack of empirical validity for some of the disorders and a focus on a neurobiological model, which excludes clinicians working from other domains (e.g., social, interpersonal, psychodynamic).
