Late life is associated with lower prevalence of many types of psychopathology, including anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcohol use disorders, and some types of personality disorders. There is longitudinal evidence of attenuation of symptom severity or even remission for most of these disorders. Many of these decreases are due to the improved emotion regulation that has been documented in late life. It is also possible, however, that lower rates of disorder in late life may be a methodological artifact rather than reflecting a true age-related decline.
