Cultural psychopathology is the study of culture and the definition, experience, distribution, and psychological disorders. The chapter discuses four of the greatest advancements in cultural psychopathology research: The incorporation of cultural factors in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV and the continued development of cultural issues in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5, the publication of the World Mental Health Report, the release of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Supplemental Report on Mental Health: Culture, Race and Ethnicity, and the completion of the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys. The chapter then discusses several culturally relevant types of psychiatric disorders, such as ataques de nervios. It ends on important areas for future study.
