Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a chronic and highly debilitating neurodevelopmental disorder. The major diagnostic features are social communication/interaction deficits and presence of restricted, repetitive behaviors or interests. ASDs typically begin at an early age and persist throughout an individual’s lifetime. ASD is highly heritable; over 90% of ASD has a genetic cause. There are several treatments designed to target the secondary symptoms of ASD (e.g., aggression). The most widely used and effective treatment is applied behavior analysis.
