Valency and Cases
(chapter 8)
The valency of a verb refers to the type and number of complements needed by the verb to make a meaningful and grammatically complete clause or sentence.
In this chapter you will find a variety of exercises on sentence patterns, reflexive verbs, direct, indirect and prepositional objects and predicate complements.
Case, complements (8.3 - 8.8)
Exercise 1 - Find a match for the sentences.
Exercise 2 - Nominative or accusative? Provide the case ending. You will need to write the complete word, not just the endings.
Exercise 3 - Put the noun phrase or pronoun in brackets into the correct case.

Prepositional Objects (8.6)
Exercise 1 - Provide a suitable preposition to go with the verb. The case of the following noun phrase can provide a clue as to which preposition to use.
Exercise 2 - Insert a suitable preposition. The case of the following noun phrase can help you determine which preposition to use.
Exercise 3 - In this quiz you will need to provide a preposition to go with the verb and the rewrite the noun phrase in brackets with the correct ending.
- Example:
- Ich habe meinen Chef _ (eine Gehaltserhöhung) gefragt.
- Answer: nach einer Gehaltserhöhung
Exercise 4 - In this quiz you will need to provide a preposition to go with the verb and the correct ending for the noun phrase in brackets.

Reflexive Verbs (8.2)
Exercise 1 - This is a basic quiz on reflexive verbs. Fill in the gaps with a suitable reflexive verb in the accusative or dative.
Exercise 2 - Accusative or dative? Decide on the case of the reflexive verb.
Exercise 3 - A quiz on reflexive pronouns, personal pronouns and cases. Fill in the blanks with a pronoun and/or a suitable form of the noun phrase in brackets.
