This National Geographic article points to recent research indicating that interspecies mating in animals is much more common that previously thought, and may in fact produce hybridization that increases genetic diversity in order to adapt to changing environments.
Hormone-Mimicking Chemicals Cause Inter-Species Mating: Bisphenol A Breaks Down Fish Species Barriers. Science Daily. July 11, 2012. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/07/120711074232.htm
This Science Daily article summarizes how the endocrine disrupting chemical known as BPA causes fish engage in interspecies mating with “invasive” species which according to researchers can cause major ecological consequences promoting the “invader”. However, what is not said is that once two different species interbreed, it is not the same species (according to human classificatory infrastructures) as the original “invader.”
