Study Questions

  1. What organization was founded in 1933 and helped nutrition to be recognized as an independent discipline?
  2. Name the classic comprehensive study Ancel Keys conducted to evaluate the physiological effects of starvation and recovery from starvation.
  3. Sports nutritionists require a strong background in nutrition and what other area of exercise science?
  4. Describe three research tools used to study health- and exercise-related aspects of nutrition and explain what types of studies could be performed using each technology.
  5. Describe the two primary avenues of academic preparation for becoming a registered dietitian.
  6. Explain the differences between dietetics, food science, and exercise nutrition and describe what types of jobs are available in each discipline.
  7. Determine your professional goals for a career in exercise nutrition and develop a course of study designed to meet those goals: desired degree(s) and courses needed, certifications, and the like. If you are interested in an area other than nutrition, write about how nutrition will impact your field.

  1. Go to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website (www.eatright.org). Write a brief description of the Academy and identify its goals or initiatives.
  2. Go to the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) website (www.nutrition.org). What are the benefits and expenses of a student membership?
  3. What does the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) have to offer a sports nutritionist? Go to the GSSI website (www.gssiweb.com), find three articles from the Sport Science Library, and then summarize them.
