Learning Objectives

1. Understand necessary terminology for the study of music, including melody, harmony, rhythm (beat, meter, tempo), text setting (syllabi vs. melismatic), timbre, ornamentation, improvisation, and form.
2. Become familiar with mainstream popular music genres associated with the West, as a foundation for the study of popular world music, including popular song, ballroom dance, jazz, rock and hip-hop.
