Pronunciation and Phonetics

Welcome to the Companion Website for Pronunciation and Phonetics

On this Companion Website you will find audio recordings of model pronunciations and other audio material relating to Pronunciation and Phonetics: A Practical Guide for English Language Teachers. This engaging, succinct text is an introduction to both phonetics and phonology as applied to the teaching of pronunciation to English language learners. It selectively covers the main areas of phonetics and phonology as well as practical issues related to learners and how they learn languages, and what represents good practice in terms of classroom activities for pronunciation. Innovative sample activities put into practice the theoretical points covered

The Companion Website contains sound recordings of various items from the book. Some are spoken by a Standard Southern British English (SSBE) speaker, some by a General American (GenAm) speaker, and some by both. The recordings relate to Section I of the book (Phonetics) only, not to Section II (Pronunciation Teaching) or Section III (Sample Exercises). The reason recordings of the sample exercises are not provided is because the pronunciation of the items in this section should be clear by then, if you have understood the first two sections. In any case, if you are not a native speaker of English, it is an opportunity to ask a native speaker to pronounce items, in order to be sure. If that person is a native speaker, but not of SSBE or GenAm, this is an opportunity to discover differences between accents of English (see chapter 13).
