Medical device standards and regulations (USA and other countries)

Regulations and Standards

A clear knowledge of regulations and standards regarding medical technology is vital to be able to provide full support to the equipment. Most regulations and standards pertain to patient and staff safety or to performance or manufacturing requirements.

These guidelines may be local (municipal, State or Provincial), or they may be national or international.

Local standards are too variable to cover here, but generally, local governments look to national and international bodies for guidance concerning such topics as medical technology.

National regulatory bodies include the Food and Drug Administration in the United States and Health Canada in Canada. Testing and standards agencies such as Underwriters Laboratories or the Canadian Standards Association carry no legal weight themselves, though their guidelines often form the basis of legal requirements.

Internationally, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provide information and guidance on many technical matters.

Contact information:

  • AAMI - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation

  • ANSI - American National Standards Institute

  • FDA - US - U. S. Food and Drug Administration

  • Health Canada - Health Canada - Drugs & Health Products

  • IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

  • ISO - International Organization for Standardization

Some other organizations

Roche Diagnostics

Throughout our 125-year history, Roche has grown into one of the world’s largest biotech companies, as well as a leading provider of in-vitro diagnostics and a global supplier of transformative innovative solutions across major disease areas. Our commitment to our people, partners, stakeholders and, most importantly, our patients remains as strong as it was on the first day of our journey.

Our core business is the discovery, development and manufacturing of in vitro tests for the diagnosis of various diseases that include cancer, diabetes, Covid-19, hepatitis, human papillomavirus and many others.

In-vitro tests

In vitro diagnostics (IVDs) are tests that can detect disease, conditions and infections done on samples such as blood or tissue that have been taken from the human body. They allow doctors to diagnose patients effectively and work to provide appropriate treatments.

The samples are analysed directly at physicians' offices or in laboratories, which we supply with our tests and instruments.

Instruments

Most of our in vitro tests run on diagnostic instruments that we develop and manufacture ourselves or with external partners. Some of these devices are small, and are used to analyse a patient's blood or urine. You can find these in doctors offices and clinics. Other instruments are large analysis modules, some the size of small cars, which can be integrated to provide a seamless molecular diagnostics solution for central laboratories. These systems allow hundreds of samples to be analysed in parallel, testing for many different diseases.

The laboratory-based diagnostic systems work with advanced technologies equally as sophisticated as those you might find in modern aircraft. These analytical laboratory instruments are fully automatic, enabling the analysis of a large number of samples in a short time. In addition, advanced automation reduces the opportunity for error, which benefits patients. Thus, laboratories are able to deliver high-quality patient results in a highly efficient manner.

Digital solutions

The digitisation of the healthcare system opens up a host of new possibilities that can improve the quality of healthcare and make services more affordable. At Roche, we have developed a broad portfolio of digital solutions for physicians and patients.

For laboratories

For laboratories, we offer software that supports specialists in their diagnostic work, such as pathologists in the interpretation of tissue samples through artificial intelligence. These tools do not replace pathologists, they enable them to be more efficient and confident in their diagnoses. We also develop solutions that automate and interconnect all areas and devices of a laboratory. This leads to greater efficiency and less susceptibility to errors in the laboratory. The patient benefits through high-quality laboratory results.

Healthcare providers have always relied on clinical imaging when making diagnoses, determining treatment plans, and analyzing treatment efficacy. While the majority of the volume of images have traditionally been handled by the radiology and cardiology departments, imaging has now expanded to encompass a variety of service lines that span the healthcare enterprise.

To keep pace with this proliferation of clinical imaging, organizations are starting to implement an enterprise imaging strategy to help manage all of the imaging content coming in from across the care continuum.

Enterprise imaging

Our comprehensive Synapse® Enterprise Imaging portfolio, supported by our AI-enabled platform REiLI, breaks down the barriers between technologies and teams across the enterprise to empower real-time, cross-departmental collaboration – helping providers to see the whole patient, so they can treat the whole patient. Our pioneering innovations in digital image visualization leverage today’s most advanced network, server, and storage architecture to support the ever-growing requirements of today’s healthcare enterprises.

Seamless information sharing for intelligent, proactive care

Imaging interoperability is critical for diagnosis, treatment, care coordination, and follow-up, however, legacy healthcare IT systems were not designed to communicate easily with one another, which can be an obstacle for meaningful patient information and imaging data sharing.

The Synapse® Enterprise Imaging portfolio – including VNA, Radiology PACS, Cardiology PACS, EIS, 3D, and Enterprise Viewer – were designed to overcome this challenge.

The portfolio links all healthcare IT systems across diagnostic departments to create the complete picture of patient health.

Continuous innovation

We remain dedicated to continuous imaging innovation, now and into the future. The Synapse Enterprise Imaging product line is powered by robust server-side technology, converges Synapse Radiology PACS, Cardiology PACS, 3D Advanced Visualization, VNA and Fujifilm’s AI-enabled platform REiLI® on one common viewing platform. The solution provides unlimited enterprise imaging access through one diagnostic viewer to bring patient imaging and information to providers across the enterprise.

Innovation and integration

Access an increasing variety of surgical procedures. Flexible, modular da VInci systems feature a standard user experience that may help drive reproducible outcomes. With integration of our multifaceted vision technologies, energy systems, stapling, and instruments, we’re continuing to invent new ways to help transform MIS.

Ion

Innovation to advance lung care

The Ion endoluminal system is Intuitive's robotic-assisted platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the lung. We built Ion on the belief that collecting lung tissue samples for biopsy could be safe and simple, even when nodules are small and located in the peripheral lung. Ion’s ultrathin, ultramaneuverable catheter allows clinicians to reach small lesions in all 18 segments of the lung.1 And its unprecedented stability enables the precision needed for biopsy.2

Improving precision2 and efficiency is at the core of our intent with Ion. Through listening to and learning from our customers, we continuously refine the system—to keep Ion at the forefront of what’s possible.

Respinning what's possible

We’re enhancing Ion’s biopsy workflow 3 by integrating Ion and Siemens Healthineers’ Cios Spin mobile imaging system. With this connection, a 3D scan is performed by Cios Spin and automatically sent to the Ion system. From the Ion console touchscreen, you can now refine navigation and verify tool-in-lesion.4

The integration offers guidance when managing differences in nodule locations seen on preprocedure CT images and intraprocedural imaging.

Expanding insight

Every design decision, from catheter sizing to the use of shape-sensing technology, represents a focused effort to enhance the reach, precision, and stability relative to manual technologies while aiming to minimize complication rates.
