                            The Virginia Historical Society provides a source for further research as well as specific information on the history of Virginia, including a series of rotating online exhibits highlighting the holdings of the society.

                            The Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill includes articles, book reviews, photographs, and other online resources for a more in-depth study of the South.

                            http://www.civilwar.org This educational website, maintained by the Civil War Trust, a non-profit organization focused on preserving Civil War battlefields, includes maps, primary sources, and many short articles on a multitude of topics regarding the Civil War. An excellent place to begin if you are interested in visiting battlefields.

                            http://www.loc.gov/pictures/ This site allows the user to search the Library of Congress for Civil War related pictures. The Library of Congress is one of the best places for locating digital pictures, maps, and other primary sources related to the Civil War as well as many other topics.

                            The Library of Congress’s website devoted specifically to the Civil War and Reconstruction. This link provides an easy guide to the Civil War holdings of the Library of Congress.

                            The National Archives provides an easy way to access their holdings related to the Civil War. Maps, photos, articles, and primary documents are only a click away.

                            The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, maintained by the National Park Service and the National Archives, contains a collection of military records containing basic information about the servicemen who served during the Civil War. You can search by unit or name for both Union and Confederate soldiers.

                            The National Park Service’s website devoted to the Civil War. This interactive site includes information on battle sites and short articles covering many Civil War related topics.

                            The African American Civil War Memorial and Museum website provides information on the holdings of the museum as well as small articles on African Americans’ contribution to the Civil War.

                            The Ohio State University provides online access to the Official Records of the Civil War including both Union and Confederate documents.

                            The United States Military Academy Department of History website includes atlases of specific Civil War sites and campaigns.

                            Duke University’s digital special collections makes available women’s letters, journals, and other documents related to their involvement in the Civil War. The site also provides links to other resources pertaining to women’s involvement in the Civil War.

                            The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s digital collection that includes primary documents related to Southern history, culture, and literature.

                            The rare map collection at the University of Georgia Hargrett Library. A great resource for Civil War and other historical maps.

                            The Valley of the Shadow is a digital archive from the University of Virginia that compares a southern and northern county including maps, journals, letters, newspapers, and many other documents related to the daily life of men and women during the Civil War.

                            The American Civil War Homepage includes records from the Congressional Globe as well as many other documents such as music lyrics, local and state histories, and an extensive list of Civil War websites.

                            The Smithsonian Associates provide virtual tours of historical sites and many articles related to the Civil War.

                            H-Civwar is a listserv devoted to the history of the Civil War that includes book reviews, historical discussions, and sources for further research. H-Net also provides listserves for a variety of historical topics.

                            This website features a complete archive of Harper’s Weekly from 1861–1865 as well as other primary sources related to the Civil War.

                            An extensive collection of Civil War images provided by the Smithsonian Institution.

                            Map (part 1) and Map (part 2), created on Google Maps, these links access an interactive map of Civil War battlefields.

                            James F. Epperson, a mathematics professor at the University of Michigan as well as a Civil War aficionado, maintains this collection of links to primary documents pertaining to secession and the Civil War.
