Beverly was a Virginia planter and clerk of the Governor’s Council, a political body comprised of the Virginia colony’s wealthiest and most powerful men. His father, Robert Beverly senior (bap. 1635–1687), was a stout defender of Governor William Berkeley during Bacon’s Rebellion (1676).
