How To Navigate Your Interactive Electronic Textbook (IET)

1. Navigating through the e-textbook

The textbook contents are listed in a navigation menu on the left side of your screen.
The major textbook headings are displayed. Click on the grey arrows to the left of the headings to display Unit and Lesson subheadings.

When you click on any Contents heading to access that text, there are three functions for moving through the text:

  1. scroll down the screen –- which takes you to consecutive pages within your selected textbook section; and
  2. click on the orange arrows at the top right and left of your screen -– which takes you to the next or previous section of the IET, as listed in the Contents menu.
  3. change the page number at the bottom of the screen, and click “Go.”

The first section of the textbook, titled “What in the World is Music?” in the Contents menu, does not display subsections in the menu. This introductory section is equivalent to pp. i-xi in the print textbook, and includes the title page, publication details, dedication page, and Table of Contents. To access these, click on “What in the World is Music?” in the Contents menu, then use the orange arrow at the top right of your screen to move forward through the pages.

2. Accessing the course media

You need to have both your IET and Companion Website open simultaneously (on two tabs), and be logged into the Companion Website, in order for the Audio and Video links in your IET to work. Please note that the Companion Website currently times out after 20 minutes. You will need to “sign in” again on the Companion Website to continue accessing the course media in your IET.

You can access Audio and Video examples either through hyperlinked titles in the Lesson text or through Audio and Video icons listed below the relevant text paragraphs. When you click on a hyperlinked title or icon, a corresponding Audio or Video menu appears on screen, from which you select the specific example you wish to access. The relevant Audio or Video file will open in a new window, and you will need to hit the “play” button to listen to or watch the example.

To exit the Audio or Video window, click on the X in the top right corner of the screen. This will take you back to the Audio or Video menu. You may want to close this window also to avoid having many Companion Website tabs open as you access successive audio and video examples. To return to the IET, click on the Routledge Interactive tab in your browser. You need only one Companion Website tab open for all media links in the IET to work.

3. Key Concepts, Thinking About Music Questions, and Interactive Self-Test Questions

To access the Key Concepts, Thinking About Music Questions, and Interactive Self Test Questions for each Lesson, click on the Lesson Conclusions in the IET Contents menu. From each Conclusion page, click on the orange forward arrow at the top of the screen to access three further pages:

The first page provides a list of Key Concepts for the lesson, and a set of “Thinking About Music Questions” related to the lesson content.

The second page provides lesson end-notes that are linked to their respective reference in the lesson text via end-note numbers.

The third page is a set of Interactive Self-Test Questions: three True/False and three Multiple Choice. These are designed for you to assess how well you have understood the lesson material. If you select the correct answer, when you click on the “check” button at the bottom of the page, the answer will be highlighted in green. If you select the wrong answer, it will appear in red.

4. Glossary, Video Index, and Index

A glossary of terms appears on p. 245 of your IET (and your print textbook). Throughout the lesson texts, glossary terms are identified with boldface type. By placing your cursor over a glossary term in the IET lessons, the term’s definition will appear in a pop-up box on screen.

A Video Index and IET Index appear on p. 275 and p. 283 respectively. The Video Index groups videos by Geographical Region and by Voices and Instruments. Clicking on a hyperlinked Video number takes you to the corresponding IET page where the video is discussed. Likewise in the IET Index, the page references for each Index term are hyperlinked. Clicking on the page numbers in the Index takes you directly to that page in the IET. Your browser back button will return you to the Index.
