Alison Gopnik The Philosphical Baby  –  beautifully put together talks about the fascinating studies taking place about children’s brains and how much more we understand about what they are learning. Alison Gopnik suggests that there is so much science taking place in early childhood development that is not always measurable or quantifiable, so it is the adult role to find a way to understand it and make conclusions about what is observed. She also talks about the place of women in early childhood studies and science.

Michael Rosen’s website with videos of him performing his poems. Also found on YouTube. These are brilliant, fun resources for helping children to be involved in performance poetry and encouraging the use of language for storytelling and making meaning out of their lives. These can be watched over and over, and children will copy them, make their own, and share them with each other and parents.

In this video clip, a child and his teacher are involved in a hotel reception role play. Questions to think about whilst you watch this video include:

1. What does the child demonstrate that he knows about speaking and listening, reading and writing?
2. What mathematical learning is demonstrated here?
3. How does the teacher scaffold the learning here?
4. What makes this role play an effective context for this young child’s learning?

This set of videos from Ofsted gives examples of ‘good practice’ in early years settings. The videos demonstrate that ‘good practice’ can be shown in different ways and using different approaches. The children and adults in the videos show what the ideas discussed in this section look like in practice. For example, the video from Chelsea Open Air Nursery includes examples of risk taking, how this impacts on children’s learning and considers the role of the adult.

This set of videos from Education Scotland includes several experts in the field of early years education talking about specific ideas that relate to the chapters in this section of the book. For example, Dr Rosemary Roberts and Robert Balbernie talk about their thoughts on the importance of building good relationships in the early years.

It says that the first rule in leadership is ‘everything is your fault!’. This is a good summary of the job role as leaders need to take on responsibility for developing a quality setting, and they are held increasingly accountable through registration and inspection by Ofsted.
