Chapter 1

Video 1. History Mental Illness

i. This short clip introduces the history of madness and mental disorder and how it has been treated over the course of history.

Video 2. Mental Health: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

ii. In this segment from the show Last Week Tonight, comedian and satirist John Oliver gives a quick and helpful, if somewhat vulgar, overview of the mental health system in the United States, how it is affecting violence, and what Congress is (or isn’t) doing about it.

Video 3. Bedlam: The History of Bethlem Hospital

iii. This full length documentary goes into the history of London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital, also known as Bedlam. While it focuses on the history of a particular hospital—one of history’s most notorious—it also illustrates how the mentally ill have been treated throughout history. Chapter 2

Video 1. DSM-5: An Overview from APA's New President

i. In this short clip, then-President Elect of the American Psychological Association Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman discusses the recently published and released DSM-5. While giving a brief overview and justification, he also takes on some of the arguments against the DSM, including the medicalization of normal behaviour.

Video 2. Top Ten Changes in DSM 5

ii. In this clip a practicing psychiatrist discusses what he considers to be the top 10 changes in DSM-5. While the clip gives a good overview of many important changes, it is also useful in getting a feel of how actual psychiatrists who use the manual feel about some of the changes, their disagreements, and how they expected society to react.

Video 3. Schizophrenia

iii. This trailer from the often forgotten movie Out of Darkness starring Diana Ross follows an African American woman struggling with schizophrenia. The clip deals with issues of intersectionality, as it introduces both race and socioeconomic status.

Video 4. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

iv. The opening clip to the hit film As Good As It Gets shows Jack Nicholson’s character exemplifying obsessive compulsive disorder in the form of repetitive tasks.

i. In these two clips Mark Vonnegut, who is featured in the book as a case study for schizophrenia, discusses his books, life, struggle with mental illness, and living with a famous father—author Kurt Vonnegut.

Video 2. William Styron talks about emotional depression

ii. William Styron, who is featured in the book as an example of depression, discusses his struggle with mental illness in an interview with Charlie Rose.

Video 3. Anne Sexton at home reading Wanting to Die

iii. In this clip Anne Sexton, the famous poet and mother of Linda Grey Sexton, reads a poem entitled “Wanting to Die.” In this particular work, the suicidal desires of her mother are romanticized.

Video 4. A tale of mental illness — from the inside

iv. This Ted Talk by Elyn Saks, a lawyer who suffers from schizophrenia, provides another personal story of struggling with mental illness. As Saks argues for society to view the mentally ill in different ways and to give them more autonomy, students should look for themes discussed in the book and related to other biographical accounts.

Video 1. Early Treatment of Mental Disorders

i. This short clip describes some of the outdated and more barbaric forms of “treatment” that have been used across the ages. Some graphic content.

Video 2. Dangerous Method Keira Knightley sick

ii. In this clip from the film A Dangerous Method, Michael Fassbender’s Carl Jung (a student of Freud), begins psychoanalysis with a reluctant and disturbed Sabina (Keira Knightley).

Video 3. Trauma After Katrina: Kids Still Suffering Emotionally

iii. This CNN report shows the emotional toll that extreme life circumstances, such as Hurricane Katrina, can take on individuals and how these can influence their mental health—even several years after the events.

Video 4. Schizophrenia

iv. In this Ted Talk, Sherwin Nuland, an author and surgeon who underwent electroconvulsive therapy, describes the process and how it changed him (for the better).

Chapter 5

Video 1. Mental Health Issues

i. These clips discuss mental health issues, specifically depression, in light of the 2008 Great Recession.

Video 2. Labeling theory in The Wire

ii. This clip gives an example of labeling theory through the popular TV show The Wire. Of particular importance is that students are labeled as having oppositional defiant disorder and problem drinking, while not considering the structural conditions that the kids live in. There is a second part that is not quite so focused on mental health, but gives more examples of labeling theory.

iii. These clips discuss the classic study performed by David Rosenhan and his colleagues, where they gained admittance to a mental hospital by faking symptoms, and promptly quit displaying them upon arrival to the hospital.

Video 1. 4 Myths About Mental Health In The US

i. This short clip discusses some myths about mental health, while covering the topics of prevalence, ease of access to services, violence, and economics—all with cited statistics.

Video 2. Mental Disorders as Brain Disorders: Thomas Insel at TEDxCaltech

ii. This Ted Talk by the director of the NIMH discusses the prevalence of mental illness when compared to physical illness. It then goes on to discuss mental illness as a brain disorder, a much less sociological argument, but one that can nonetheless foster discussion.

Video 1. Growing Wealth Divide Is Bad for Health

i. While this clip from the film Unnatural Causes is not specific to mental health, it discusses the gradient in health, which can be easily related to mental health. It also features Michael Marmot, who discusses the Whitehall studies as well as the social psychological factors that lead to the gradient.

Video 2. Blue Jasmine CLIP - Advice (2013) - Woody Allen Movie HD

ii. This clip from the Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine features a former wealthy socialite (Cate Blanchett) and provides an example of social causation, as her financial ruin leads her to mental problems and problem drinking.

Video 3. Reign over me - Movie Trailer

iii. This movie trailer for the film Reign Over Me provides an example of social selection, or the drift hypothesis, as a man (Adam Sandler), develops PTSD in the wake of losing his entire family after 9/11, which subsequently causes him to fall down the socioeconomic ladder.

iv. This clip and trailer from the film Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway shows how those in a higher class try to dismiss mental health problems as problem behavior.

Chapter 8

Video 1. Mental Health & Gender (feat. Hannah Hart)

i. This clip contains a discussion on mental health and gender by online activist and Marriage and Family therapist Kati Morton, with online personality Hannah Hart. They focus on eating disorders and bipolar disorder, and challenge some of the gender roles and stereotypes that are prevalent in society. They also address stigma, and the internalizing/externalizing dichotomy.

ii. This clip from Disney Pixar’s film Inside Out shows how life changes affect the mental health of children and how recognizing distress as problem behavior may be difficult.

iii. This clip from The Perks of Being a Wallflower shows Charlie (Logan Lerman) having a breakdown in response to traumatic events that took place during his childhood and adolescence.

Videos 4. Still Alice Movie CLIP - Genetics (2015) - Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart Drama HD

iv. In this clip from the film Still Alice, Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin confront their family to discuss the fact that Alice (Moore) has early onset Alzheimer’s. This clip shows the influence of genetics and how families can be disrupted.

Videos 5. Clip from Prayers for Bobby

v. In this clip from the made-for-TV movie Prayers for Bobby, Mary (Susan Sarandon) discusses how religious and family shame led her gay son to commit suicide. This can be a jumping-off point to discuss mental health issues in the LGBT community.

Videos 6. Documentary on Mental Health

vi. This is a documentary on mental health among high schoolers and focuses on depression and suicide.

Chapter 9

Video 1. Global mental health and migration | Brian J. Hall | TEDxUniversityofMacau

i. In this Ted Talk, Dr. Brian Hall, a psychologist and epidemiologist of the University of Macau, discusses immigration and mental health. He discusses not just the prevalence, but also the structural conditions that lead to poor mental health among migrants. He then goes on to offer solutions through “e-mental health” using cell phones.

Video 2. Telepsychiatry Improves Outcomes in Frontier Communities: 23rd annual Premier Cares Award winner

ii. This clip shows how tele-psychiatry is being used in rural, remote, and poorly funded areas to provide affordable and much-needed psychiatric services through technology and innovative means.

Video 1. Black Mental Health Isn't the Same as White Mental Health

i. A talk by Dr. Michael Lindsey of NYU discussing how he thinks black mental health must be treated differently than white mental health due to the history, cultural differences, and experiences unique to African American communities.

Video 2. Let's quit abusing drug users

ii. Ted Talk challenging some aspects of experimental psychology in terms of addiction, but also speaks to the bias of punishment on crack and powdered cocaine, and disparities in the black community. Touches on many societal issues, while also delving into the biological and physiological effects of drugs, as well as the psychology of addicts.

This clip from the film Canvas shows youth Chris (Devon Gearhart) having a breakdown in front of his father (Joe Pantoliano) after facing bullying from kids at school because of his schizophrenic mother. This provides an example of family disruption in multiple facets of the young child’s life.

Video 1. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

i. This trailer from the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (an adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel) is mentioned in the book. Besides giving an example of life inside of a mental hospital, it also shows interactions between Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) and the authoritative Nurse Ratched and her machine-like efficiency.

Video 2. Girl, Interrupted

ii. This trailer for the film Girl, Interrupted not only serves as an example of hospital life, but also how deviant behavior has been seen as a mental illness, hitting on issues of power.

Video 3. Bellevue: Inside Out | Psychiatric Hospital Documentary

iii. This is a full length documentary on Bellevue hospital and shows hospital life in a less stylized, and much more realistic, version than is seen in Hollywood movies.

i. This 60 Minutes section describes violence and the untreated mentally ill. It gets at issues of guns, involuntary commitment, and prisons as the largest mental health provider.

ii. This Ted Talk by Denny Morrison seeks to decrease stigma of mental illness by likening it to physical illness.

iii. This documentary by Vice describes how the mentally ill are more commonly institutionalized in prisons rather than receiving health care due to an overburdened and financially strapped system.

i. This news segment goes inside a private Chinese mental hospital.

Video 2. BBC Mental A History of the Madhouse FULL DOCUMENTARY

ii. This full length documentary shows the history of British madhouses. Besides giving a history of the British system, it also discusses early forms of treatment, and the results of deinstitutionalization.

Video 3. Inside Japan Inc.: Suicide as Salvation

iii. This short documentary from the Pulitzer Center discusses mental health in Japan, with a focus on the problem of overworking leading to suicide. Besides giving some information on the mental health care system in Japan, it also shows cultural differences in how mental health is viewed in an Eastern society.
