Flashcards
Links
This page lists a number of websites which may be useful for smaller museums with few staff and limited resources. Vast quantities of information and advice are now available on the Internet – so much that it can be difficult to find one’s way around them. The ‘gateway’ sites listed below provide entry points for a number of different networks. For information on using the Internet, see Museum Basics 4 Unit 114.
Section 1 Introductory
Virtual Library Museum Pages
http://archives.icom.museum/vlmp
A brave and idiosyncratic effort to list all the museums in the world which have an on-line presence. Inevitably there are huge numbers of museums which do not appear – for example, almost the whole of Africa!
Section 2 The museum and its users
Leicester University School of Museum Studies
https://le.ac.uk/museum-studies
This site includes a rich variety of the School’s recent projects and publications. They offer many ideas on engaging people who do not regularly visit museums.
Inspiring Learning for All
http://www.inspiringlearningforall.gov.uk
A framework for developing or improving a museum learning service.
World Federation of Friends of Museums (WFFM)
An international non-profit, non-governmental organisation that unites and supports all Friends of museums around the world. Provides useful publications about setting up and managing Friends’ groups.
Section 3 Presenting and interpreting collections
Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN)
Valuable for its resources for web-based museum services, and as a portal to many other useful websites.
National Association for Museum Exhibition
This US Association offers many of the back copies of its magazine Exhibitionist here.
Subject Specialist Networks
http://www.mla.gov.uk/what/programmes/renaissance/ssns
The UK’s network of museum specialist groups offers support and resources in a surprising variety of museum fields. It is a useful model for museums in other countries.
ocial History Curators Group (SHCG)
This UK-based site offers a wide range of training materials and other resources for history curators, including the ambitious ‘FirstBASE’ facility. (Crispin Paine, co-author of Museum Basics, is proud to have been SHCG’s first Chair).
Association for Heritage Interpretation (AHI)
This Association is UK-based, with an emphasis on countryside interpretation. The ‘find a supplier’ section is potentially very useful, though a bit thin at present.
Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC)
This site’s ‘resource center’ offers lots of advice on developing interactive interpretation of science and technology.
Art History Resources
http://arthistoryresources.net/
A personal but very comprehensive and imaginative gateway to hundreds of websites of use to art historians throughout the world, including free images, museum sites, essays and notes of many different sorts.
Museums Association ‘Find a Supplier’
http://www.museumsassociation.org/suppliers/find-a-supplier
The UK Museums Association’s website includes a list of suppliers, who can in turn often provide invaluable information on museum equipment and materials.
Section 4 Collecting and collections
Collections Link
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk
A large site containing a very rich variety of resources for all aspects of the care and management of collections. Particularly valuable is the ‘browse by subject’ tab, which allows the user to find (for example) advice on caring for plastics. At first sight this site may seem particularly focussed on the UK, but many of its resources are relevant to museums throughout the world.
International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM)
http://www.iccrom.org/index.shtml
ICCROM is an intergovernmental organisation (IGO) dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage. Its website is valuable for its emphasis on all forms of ‘cultural heritage’, from historic buildings to museum collections, in many different countries. It gives good attention to needs in Africa and Asia. Note the training programme and unusual publications list.
Museums Association – Collections
http://www.museumsassociation.org/collections/monument-resources
The website contains valuable information on many different pages. Here, for example, is advice on interpreting marks – patent numbers, etc. – on manufactured artefacts, and on dating historic photographs.
Section 5 Managing and caring for collections
The Getty
The Getty Research Institute has much useful material here (see especially ‘Search tools and databases’), as does the Getty Conservation Institute. The site describes recent high-quality international projects, and focuses on built and buried heritage as well as on museums.
The Institute of Conservation (ICON)
http://www.icon.org.uk/index.php
ICON’s website is a rich resource for museums as well as for conservators. Particularly valuable are the Chantry Library Web Resources Page which offers links to many useful websites, and the ‘How to Care for...’ page.
Heritage Preservation: the National Institute for Conservation
http://www.heritagepreservation.org
This US site has a good number of free publications to download. Strong on disaster preparation and response.
Australian Government
http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/publications/significance2-0/index.html
The ground-breaking publication Significance 2.0: a Guide to Assessing the Significance of Collections is available here.
University College London (UCL)
http://www.museumsassociation.org/download?id=452315
The UCL Collections Review Toolkit by Jayne Dunn and Subhadra Das. A practical guide to carrying out a review of your museum’s collections.
Section 6 The museum and its buildings
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
RIBA’s website has advice on finding and commissioning an architect, and explains their well-known Outline Plan of Work, often called the RIBA Stages.
Section 7 The museum and its management
Smithsonian: Museum Studies
Some valuable resources for people planning museum training: reading lists, lists of museum organisations, links to curricula, etc. Particularly focussed on the USA.
International Committee for the Training of Personnel (ICTOP)
ICOM’s training committee website provides links to materials relating to the development of training programmes.
Association of Independent Museums (AIM)
This UK-based site has many free advisory booklets on different aspects of managing smaller Trustee-run museums available to download.
American Association for State and Local History
AASLH is an association for US local history societies, so its impressive array of (mostly paid-for) publications and other resources are concerned with history research, conservation of historic buildings, heritage interpretation as well as the running of museums. Its Small Museums pages have some useful resources.
Section 8 Supporting resources
International Council of Museums (ICOM)
ICOM’s official website is most valuable for its links to ICOM’s 171 National, International and other committees. Besides details of ICOM’s conferences and other activities, the site carries ICOM’s Code of Ethics and other useful resources. See the fascinating, distinctly French (but still very Eurocentric) approach of ‘Key Concepts in Museology’.
The American Alliance of Museums (AAM)
The AAM’s website provides an extensive list of resources, including publications for sale. Many of the books listed in the Museum Basics 4e bibliography are available through the AAM.
Taylor & Francis/Routledge
The publisher’s catalogue features a wide range of books and journals on museum studies and companion websites that complement the coverage of Museum Basics.
Museums and the Web Conference
http://www.archimuse.com/conferences/mw.html
The papers from the annual international conference on all aspects of the web relating to museums. A valuable source of information for those wanting to keep up to date with developments in the use of new technologies in the museum context.
Bibliography
The book titles listed here have been selected as a resource from which a working library for a small to medium-sized museum might be developed (see Unit 113). They are all English-language titles and have been arranged to reflect the structure of Museum Basics.
