Chapter 9: Conclusion

Since our writing, the Amazon streaming series Transparent has emerged as a critical hit. Available to Amazon Prime customers, the series tells the story of Mort/Maura, a 60-something father of 3 beginning his transition to living his life as a woman.  The series has received a great deal of critical praise, and we have included examples below.  While the show no doubt offers a humane, complex view of transgender lives, we encourage you to think back to the “yes, but” approach, and consider where the possible yesses and buts emerge as transgender men and women gain increasing visibility.
