Elizabethan Warm-Up
My spirit lifts me high above the ground.
I have an answer ready for any man.
I have the wit to jest even with saints.
I am as true as flesh and blood may be.
I was not born to sue but to command.
The heavens blazed with light upon my birth.
I am part of a glorious cosmic order.
I stand assured and firm upon the earth,
And am called up by an unfolding star.
I walk one tiny step below the angels.
I move with confidence towards godliness.
I am the bridge between all matter and spirit.
I am a courtier, adventurer, poet, swordsman,
A wit, philosopher, musician and a gentleman [or lady].
I sing and dance to the music of the spheres.
I know that music both heals and transforms.
I hunger for my life and will devour it.
Upon this garden earth, I plant my seeds.
My thoughts are great and so will be my deeds!
Shakespeare Speeches
The following excerpts are limited to characters who are relatively youthful or of indeterminable age. When there is an asterisk, it means another character speaks in the scene, but those lines can easily be cut so that a monolog results. Usually it is suggested where the speech might end, but occasionally just the first line is indicated since the monolog could be of various lengths. Lines vary between editions of the text so sometimes you will have to search a bit. I have occasionally omitted some well-known speeches which seem contemplative or philosophical, but lack a dramatic arc sufficient to work well out of context.
This list supplements the scenes offered at the end of Chapter 5.

The Elizabethan Interview
This is an audio recording of the ‘period personality’ featured in Chapter 5. Some of you may find you can relate better to this character by actually hearing his inflections and the way he times his ideas. It may also assist in providing examples of the kind of delivery that can work within Elizabethan style.
