artist statement:
My work is a means to articulate the complexities of my own identity as a Cuban-American. I am interested in the void that was created when I left Cuba, what was left behind and how my identity as a Cuban was formed outside of the island. Inspired by my father, who as a political refugee in the United States died while in exile, I wish to also understand his own desire to return to Cuba and reclaim his identity on the island. Exploring the ways in which exile culture is constructed in an attempt to understand how my identity as a Cuban- American sits within the Cuban diaspora in the United States, I question the flaws in an ideal notion of cultural assimilation, and by extension, unravel the complicated nature of Cuban exile culture.
what do you love about Columbia College Chicago’s MFA program?
What I admire most about the community at Columbia College is the diversity and support of its faculty. As an artist going through the growing pains of being a student and discovering ever changing aspects of my work on a daily basis, I find that having the support of a gifted and open minded faculty is an incredible asset. The support of my mentors, as well as peers, along with the 3 year program that allows for experimentation and growth, has helped develop a cohesive and mature body of work.
anticipated graduation date: May 2015
