artist statement:
Primarily a photographer, I have recently incorporated image and animation into my documentary practice. Intent on exploring what it means to be a Las Vegan through traditional street photography, I spent 48 hours photographing the streets of Las Vegas without ever setting foot on the Las Vegas Strip. My project “North of Sahara” examines residents’ relationships to their iconic city and its impact on their everyday lives. I continue my interest in regionalism as a co-founder and editor of One, One Thousand | A Publication of Southern Photography.
what do you love about Duke’s MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts?
Duke’s MFAEDA program thrives on its interdisciplinary curriculum. I came to Duke because of my admiration for the Center for Documentary Studies, but as I continue my studies here I realize being exposed to the many resources of Duke enhances my documentary practice and makes me a more well rounded artist. The willingness of the faculty, staff and students to look at work from multiple angles has sharpened my critical eye and my work as an artist.
anticipated graduation Date: May 2013
