It is our pleasure to introduce the first edition of Scott-Brown’s Essential Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

The award-winning three-volume text Scott-Brown’s Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Eighth Edition (CRC Press 2018) has been recognised as the primary ENT reference manual for nearly 70 years. Its exhaustive text has provided a definitive resource for generations of ENT Surgeons.

The inception of this new textbook emanated from the demand for an up-to-date, evidence-based textbook that is easily accessible and portable. Trainees sitting exams will find Essential Scott-Brown’s Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery a useful primary textbook, and consultants will have it on their bookshelves to serve as a ready reference resource. We also anticipate other specialists, GPs and allied healthcare professionals will use it to demystify common but complex topics.

This book provides an abbreviated version of the 8th edition of the parent textbook, with additional new content and diagrams, and we have included updated guidelines where appropriate. We would like to thank our contributing authors, who include a combination of trainees and leaders in their field. We chose our subeditors based on their love of teaching, as well as their clinical rigour; their work speaks for itself. We also thank the Editors and authors of Scott-Brown’s Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Eighth Edition, for providing content that helped produce this textbook.

Putting together this textbook has been truly enjoyable. Amidst the grey cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic, our silver lining has been a reminder of how wonderfully diverse, evolving and stimulating our specialty is. We look forward to the positive impact of our readership on the future of otorhinolaryngology.
