Chapter 8 Accommodation and MICE

Integrated activities
- What are the major factors sought by both professional conference organizers and delegates in selecting a place to host and travel to for a conference? What can a destination do to elevate its appeal based on these factors?
- There are many publicly available ‘behind the scenes’ event clips on (e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wEKTNaEBIE). After watching one of these, list the key attributes required of a PCO or event planner in order to successfully manage and stage one of these.
- One of the key areas why destinations wish to win MICE business is that it is considered a ‘high yield tourism sector’. What does this term mean? Describe the possible economic activities and value through hosting a meeting.
- Find a MICE publication (e.g. www.ttgasiamedia.com/ttg_travel_trade_publishing/ttg_mice; www.itcma.com/article.php?article_id=2998) and go to the discussions and articles on incentive travel. What in particular made these incentives so special and appealing? With this in mind, write up an attractive incentive package for your own location.
- The Events Industry Council have published some guidelines on producing a more responsible and sustainable MICE event (www.eventscouncil.org/APEX/APEXASTM.aspx). From Professional Conference Organizers to Convention and Visitors Bureaus, the issue of having some guidelines and incentives to manage and stage a MICE event more responsibly is growing in importance. As well as designing a checklist for a MICE event in your location, discuss how you would get MICE stakeholders (venue providers, suppliers, transportation providers etc.) to buy-in to, accept, and use this checklist.
