Case 2.1: The United States of America versus the United States of Europe
Points to Consider
The teaching objective of this case as related to the EU is to get the student to critically evaluate potential trade barriers presented by ‘Fortress Europe’. As a result, the student may realize that certain concerns are unfounded. The case attempts to show that many business firms and policymakers may be preoccupied with trade restrictions without understanding that some restrictions are more imaginary than real and that other restrictions may turn out to be marketing opportunities.
Regarding NAFTA and the FTAA, the teaching objective is to encourage the student to consider the implications of economic integration from a number of perspectives. As can be expected, there will be winners and losers, and it is impossible to please all groups with diverse objectives and interests. But the key issue is whether the participating countries will be better off overall.
