Case 13.1: Who Can Best Introduce the ‘City Adventurer’ into Saudi Arabia?

This teaching note was prepared by Jun Onishi of Hirosaki University.

Points to Consider

If you were a market consultant to Jack Hamilton, what would your recommendations be to him? As you respond to the following questions, be certain to provide reasons and justification for your recommendations.

  1. Identify the important characteristics for doing business in Saudi Arabia. Do not copy from the case but summarize using your own words.
  2. Hamilton realizes that the USA and Saudi Arabia are different. Identify possible cultural conflicts that may be encountered based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions. Use the format below to analyze the cultural dimensions.
  3. Hofstede Dimension Comparison Possible Source of Conflict
Power Distance Saudi Arabia is higher than USA Hamilton's frankness will be treated as arrogance
  4. If Rogart introduces ‘City Adventurer’ which will be 30% priced lower than other models, it may be difficult for Rogart to introduce other, more expensive, models in the future. Provide some advice to Rogart about how they can introduce other, more expensive watch models to the Saudi Arabia market in the future.
  5. In your view of the distributors being considered, identify the best company to sell ‘City Adventurer’ in the Saudi Arabian market and provide your rationale for making this choice.
