Flashcards

Study guide

  1. Familiarize yourself with the city plan of Rome. Where are the main Republican and imperial buildings located? How did the city develop over the centuries?
  2. How do the three palaces presented here – the Domus Aurea, the Flavian Palace (Domus Augustiana), and Hadrian’s Villa – compare and contrast with Ancient Near Eastern and Aegean palaces discussed earlier (in Chapters 3, 7, 9, and 10), in terms of design and function?
  3. How does the design of the Pantheon combine traditional and innovative elements?
  4. Compare and contrast Roman victory monuments, such as the Arch of Titus and Trajan’s Column, with commemorative monuments erected by rulers or states from earlier cultures in the Mediterranean basin, Egypt, and the Ancient Near East.
  5. What new types of civic buildings were introduced to Rome during the imperial centuries?  Name and describe selected examples.
