Flashcards
Study guide
- How does the Temple of Apollo at Didyma compare and contrast, in appearance and plan, with other Greek temples examined earlier in the book?
- Pergamon is a major example of Hellenistic urbanism, thanks to archaeological research. Take some time to learn about its history and overall growth, the buildings discovered on its acropolis and slopes, and its best known sculptural monuments (the commemorative Gauls in the court of the Temple of Athena, and the friezes of the Great Altar). Can you name and describe the buildings? What subjects were shown in sculpture, and why?
- Describe the city plan of Alexandria. Why was Greek influence so strong in this Egyptian city?
- Imagine yourself a merchant landing in the harbor at Delos. What does the city look like? What kind of life do you expect to lead during your stay?
- To what extent did the establishment of kingship in the Hellenistic period affect the appearance of Greek cities?
