Study guide

  1. Because of the enormous influence of the Doric and Ionic orders on the architecture of the Greeks, Romans, and later western Europe, it is well worth taking 15 minutes to memorize the parts of these two orders. Search for pictures of Greek temples and test yourself: identify and label the parts. If you cannot, review the diagrams.
  2. Likewise, study the typical ground plan of a Greek temple and learn the names of the rooms and features.
  3. How do the early Archaic period temples at Thermon, Olympia, and Kerkyra illustrate the process of development of the Greek temple?
  4. Characterize the sixth-century BC Ionic temples from Samos and Ephesus. How do they compare and contrast with Doric temples?
  5. Describe the significance of East Greek cities, such as Miletus and Samos, in the world of Archaic-period Greece.
