Aggression

forms of behaviour that are deliberately intended to harm or injure someone else.

Reactive aggression

forms of aggressive behaviour triggered by the anger created by a perceived provocation; also described as hot-tempered aggression.

Proactive aggression

"forms of aggressive behaviour planned in advance to achieve some goal; also described as cold-tempered aggression.

Physical aggression

aggressive behaviour designed to cause physical harm to another person.

Relational aggression

aggressive behaviour designed to damage another person’s social relationships and/or status.

Testosterone

a hormone present in much greater quantities in males than in females; it has been linked to aggressive and sexual behaviour.

Coercive cycle

a pattern of behaviour within families in which aggression by one family member produces an aggressive response that leads to an escalation in aggression.

Weapons effect

an increase in aggression produced by the sight of a weapon (e.g., gun).

Hostile expectation bias

the bias to interpret others’ behaviour as hostile in ambiguous situations.
