Chapter 3: Cultural Considerations

About

Chapter 3 introduces the many non-musical features of music study, which typically relate to associated cultural activities. The intent is to introduce these theoretical tools and perspectives of cultural study, so that the reader is prepared for their appearance in discussions found in later chapters. The chapter concludes with an in-depth case study of Istanbul, Turkey, to show how music embodies many cultural elements related to geography, history, religion and cross-cultural interaction.
